Question
Problem 20.66 A gas is inside a cylinder fitted with a piston. The gas and its surroundings are both at 20 ?C and the gas is compressed as the piston moves and decreases the cylinder volume. The compression takes place slowly enough to allow the gas temperature to stay at 20 ?C and the work done on the gas by the compression is 1.8 × 10^3 J.

Solution:
As temp does not change hence change in internal energy will be zero.
and from 1st law of thermodynamics,
Q = - 1.8 x 10^3 J (heat leaves the system)
change in entropy = Q / T
= - 1.8 x 10^3 J / (273 + 20) K
= - 6.14 J/K
