Question

Problem 20.66

A small but rigid -shaped wire carrying a 5.0-A current(Figure 1) is placed inside a solenoid. The solenoid is15 cm long and has 800 loops of wire, and the current in each loop is 7.0A.

So the only force is on the left branch, which is defined to be of length l.What is the net force per unit length on the -shaped wire?

Answer: F/l=______N/m

Explanation / Answer

Magnetic field of solenoid = uo I N /L

uo = permeability = 4pi*10^(-7)

I = current = 7 A

L = 15 cm = 0.15 m

N = 800 turns

therefore magnetic field, B = 4pi*10^(-7)*7*800/0.15 = 0.0469 T

now the force/unit lenght = B*current in wire

current in wire = 5 A

therefore, force/unit lenght = 0.0469*5 = 0.2345 N/m
