Question

Explanation please would be amazing!

(6 pts) A 5 kg mass is oscillating back and forth on a horizontal frictionless track. At time t 4 s, the mass is moving to the right (which is in the positive x direction) and has zero net force acting on it. You may assume that the mass was set in oscillatory motion at some time long before t 0 s and that there is no friction or drag. The graphs (on following page) show some property as a function of time. If the vertical axis where given the proper scaling and units, which graph would correspond to ultiple times or not at all. If no graph corresponds to the listed property, write 'N' for none. i. The mass's x-position ii. The x-component of the mass's velocity iii. The force exerted by the spring on the mass iv. The kinetic energy of the mass v. The spring potential energy vi. The total energy of the system

Explanation / Answer

(i) Position of the mass = A as net force on the system is given by

F = -kx as F = 0 i.e x = 0 i.e. there is no net displacement so Graph A where at t = 4 s x = 0 corresponds to the position graph.

(ii) X component of the velocity = Graph F as at t = 4s displacement is zero and particle is moving to the right. So its velocity will be maximum at the mean position and is positive.

(iii) The force exerted by the spring on the mass = Graph E as x = 0 at t = 4s, x = 0

So F = 0 N and it will move towards negtive maximum diection of acceleration is opposite to velocity in SHM.

(iv) N

(V) N

(vi) Total energy of the system remais constant So graph G corresponds to the total Energy of the system.
