Question
A somewhat idealized graph of the speed of the blood in the ascending aorta during one beat of the heart appears in this figure below.
A. If the blood in the aorta has a maximum velocity of vmax = 0.7 m/s how far, in cm, does the blood move during one beat?
B. Assume similar data for the motion of the blood in your aorta. Estimate how many beats of the heart it will it take the blood to get from your heart to your brain. (Assume that the distance from your heart to your brain is 30 cm .)
v(m/s) max 0.1 0.2 0.3Explanation / Answer
Part (a) Distance travelled, s = Area under the graph
s = 0.5 x base x height = 0.5 x (0.25 - 0.10) x 0.7 = 0.053 m = 5.3 cm
Part (b) Number of beats, n = 30/5.3 = 5.66 beats
