Question

Your dorm has an amateur hour every Friday night. Since you have a tremendous lung capacity, you challenge everyone to a lung capacity competition which is conducted by blowing air through one straw which in turn pulls water up through another straw, as shown in the figure. The straws are identical and have a diameter of 0.58 cm, you are able to exhale 1.1 liters of air through the horizontal straw in as little as 2 seconds, and the density of air is 1.29 kg/m3. Determine the following.

(a) speed of the air as it travels through the horizontal straw
__m/s

(b) height to which water rises in the vertical straw
___cm

QUESTION 2

Blood is flowing through an artery of radius 9 mm at a rate of 35 cm/s. Determine the flow rate (in cm3/s) and the volume (in cm3) that passes through the artery in a period of 20 s.

flow rate _____ cm3/s

______ volume 2 cm3

PLEASE ANSWER ALL THE QUESTIONS AND DONT GIVE ANY WRONG ANSWERS THANKS FOR YOUR HELP !

Explanation / Answer

(A) Volume flow rate = (1.1 x 10^-3 m^3) / (2 s)

= 0.55 x 10^-3 m^3/s

cross sectional area = pi D^2 / 4

= 2.642 x 10^-5 m^2

v = flow rate / area

v = 20.8 m/s

(b) Applying bernoulli's equation to find pressure inside vertical straw,

P = Po + rho_air v^2 /2

and P = Po + rho_water g h

equating,

1.29 x 20.8^2 / 2 = 1000 x 9.8 x h

h = 0.028 m or 2.8 cm

2. corss section area = pi (0.9^2) =2.545 cm^2

volume flow rate = 2.545 x 35 = 89.06 cm^3 / s .....Ans

in 20s,

V = 20 x 89.06 = 1781.28 cm^3 ......Ans
