Explanation / Answer
Body mass Index or BMI is a measure of body fat based on height and weight in adult men and women.
BMI is calculated by the formula = Bodyweight in kilograms / height in meters squared
BMI of Mr. Browning = 18.3
Standard categories based on BMI:
Underweight = <18.5
Normal weight = 18.5–24.9
Overweight = 25–29.9
Obesity = BMI of 30 or greater
Thus, Mr. Browning is slightly underweight.
To keep him healthy his dietary habits and exercise regime should be assessed.
A healthy diet is must for ageing adults.
Diet: As the body changes through 60s, 70s, 80s, and beyond we need proper nutrients. Metabolism slows down as we age therefore making healthy food choice is a smart thing to do.
Some tips can be followed:
Drink plenty of liquids
It can be simple water or low fat milk or other healthy beverages.
Eating together with family or friend is also advised.
Most important is that pack your meals with healthy food supplements. You can follow standards provided by any reputed health organization like Choose MyPlate.gov and the National Institute on Aging.
Next important point is the amount of food we eat in one meal. Make sure you follow instructions from some standard source like MyPlate’s SuperTracker as to what is the requirement of your body
Eat maximum vegetables as veggies are low-calorie source of nutrients and also a good source of fiber.
During aging sometimes one finds difficulty in chewing fruits, vegetables and other food items therefore go for softer food like canned foods like unsweetened fruit, low-sodium soups.
Use herbs and spices to enhance the flavor of the food as the sense of smell sense of taste changes during aging.
Seek doctor’s help about vitamins or supplements you require and make sure the food is kept safe before consuming as health related illness in aging adults may be life threatening.
Exercise Regime: For older adults of 65 years of age or older (with no limiting health conditions) need at least;
Jogging 2 hours and 30 minutes (150 minutes) of moderate-intensity aerobic activity (i.e., brisk walking) every week and
Weight training muscle-strengthening activities on 2 or more days a week that work all major muscle groups (legs, hips, back, abdomen, chest, shoulders, and arms)
