Mr. Browning is an 81-year-old patient at the primary care provider for a routine visit. As you are gathering data prior to showing him into an examination room, you note his height and weight, of 72 inches and 135 pounds.

Explanation / Answer
Mr. Browning’s BMI is 18.3 which showed that he belongs to underweight category for his particular height. For his height the normal weight should be between 136- 184 pounds. The patient should be advised to eat healthy to have a normal weight and BMI. He should be advised to obtain nutrients like potassium, calcium, vitamin D, B12 and dietary fibre from his diet.
He should be asked to lower his salt intake by adding add flavour to foods with spices and herbs. Sliced fruits and vegetable should be added to meals and snacks. Pre-sliced fruits and vegetables are nowadays on sale if slicing and chopping is a challenge. Consult doctor if the medications the particular old age person takes have an effect on appetite. Include three cups of fat-free milk in the diet throughout the day. If consuming milk is difficult take yogurt or buttermilk instead Substitute water for sugary drinks. Foods fortified with vitamin B12 (fortified cereals) should be given priority. As the person is underweight here he should be encouraged to take more amount of nutritious meal daily.
Another important aspect of maintaining a healthy weight is to be physically active at all times. As the person here is above 80 years old he cannot involve himself in heavy physical activity. So he can involve himself in doing light exercises like walking etc. Include activities that reduce the risk of falling. Always check with a doctor before beginning any physical activity.
The health care team should be apprised about the condition of the patient and the appropriate needs of the patient to maintain a healthy life style.
