Question

For the system of capacitors shown in the figure below, find the following. (Let C_1 = 4.00 mu F and C_2 = 6.00 mu F.) (a) the equivalent capacitance of the system Your response differs from the correct answer by more than 100%. mu F (b) the charge on each capacitor on C1 mu C on C_2 mu C on the 6.00 mu F capacitor mu C on the 2.00 mu F capacitor mu C (c) the potential difference across each capacitor across C_1 across C_2 across the 6.00 mu F capacitor across the 2.00 mu F capacitor A 11.0-V battery is connected to a 4.20-mu F capacitor, How much energy is stored in the capacitor?

Explanation / Answer

problem 11.

capacitance of the top branch Ct is (capacitors in series),

1/Ct=1/4+1/6

Ct=2.4 uf

bottom branch capacitance similarly is,

Cb=1.5 uf

a) equivalent capcitance is ( capacitors in parallel)

C=2.4 +1.5 =3.9 uf

b) both the branches are at te same potential.

Charge Q= C V

charge on top capactor plates,

Qt=2.4 * 90

=216 Coulombs (on C1 and 6 uf)

0n bottom plates,

Qb=1.5 *90

=135 coulombs (on 2 uf and C2)

c) potential difference

C1=Q/C

=216/4

=54 V

on 6 uf,

=216/6

=36 V

on 2 uf

135/2

=67.5 V

on C2

=135/6

=22.5 V

problem 12.

energy stored

U=CV2/2

=11*11*4.2/2 uJ(micro joules)

=254.1 *10-6 J
