Question

Hi!! I did a physics lab on Buoyancy and I have one question that I do not understand. I discovered the sample we were given to be Zinc. It has a published density of 7.13 g/cm3 and its mass is 29.24g. I calculated its density to be 7.29g/cm3. Its mass in water was 25.23g and its mass in ethanol was 25.84g. Its density in ethanol was .789g/cm3. The question my lab is asking me is as follows: "How can you justify the fact that you have ignored the buoyant force of air? Answer quantitatively by calculating the force buoyancy exerted on the sample by the air and calculating the small fraction of the sample's weight that air's buoyant force represents. (density of air = 0.0013g/cm3)" Thank you!

Explanation / Answer

the volume of smple

density = mass/ volume

Volume = mass/ density ....(i)

mass= 29.24g

density = 7.13 g/cm3

putting the values in equation -(i)

volume = 4 cm^3

Weight of air displaced

= mass x gravity

mass= 0.0013x4

=5.2x10^-3 kg

Weight of air displaced = buyont force by air = 0.0510 N
