Question
3:27 PM ..ooo AT&T; T 46% session masteringphysics.com Exercise 3.9 Mastering Physics A physics book slides off a horizontal table top with a speed of 1.40 m/s.lt strikes the floor after a time of 0.440 s.lgnore air resistance Part A Find the height of the table top above the floor. Submit Give Up Part B Find the horizontal distance from the edge of the table to the point where the book strikes the floor. vat Give Up Submit Part C Find the horizontal component of the book's velocity just before the book reaches the floor. m/S Give Up SubmitExplanation / Answer
A) the vertical component of the motion is unaffected by the horizontal velocity of the book.
so,
s = ut+ (1/2) g t2
so, h = 0*0.44 + (1/2)(9.8)(0.44)2 = 0.948 m
B)the horiontal component does not have any acceleration,
so,
V = D/t or D = V*t = 1.40 * 0.44 = 0.616 m
C) since there is no horizontal acceleration, the initial horizontal velocity = final horizontal velocity = 1.4 m/s
D) the vertical component follows accelerated path,
so, V = U + gt = 0 + 9.8 * 0.44 = 4.312 m/s
E) the total velocity = (V2x + V2y) (0.5) = 4.53 m/s
F ) tan (theta) = Vy/Vx = 3.08
so theta = 72 degree
