Question
220 HW 1 Hypothesis, Theory, Law 1 of 1
Consider each of the following statements. Determine whether the statement is most similar to a
scientific hypothesis, a scientific theory, a scientific law, or none of these. Provide a single sentence
providing your reasoning for each statement.
Help: Some of these topics may be foreign to you and others more familiar. The topics themselves are
not critical so much as to the context of the statement around the topic. I strongly suggest making sure
you know what a hypothesis, theory, and law. (More Help: They are not all better versions of the
previous.)
I will be discussing these in class with you so you must bring a copy with you as well as the one you
turn in.
i) For a light ray impinging on a reflective surface, the angle of incidence is equal to the angle of
reflection.
Law?
ii) For an angle between the polarization axes of two polarizers, the irradiance of light transmitted
through the pair of polarizers is given by: I=I0cos2 .
Law?
iii) Dinosaurs had to be large so that they could eat other large dinosaurs.
None?
iv) The surface of the Earth is broken into large plates. The size and position of these plates change
over time. The edges of these plates, where they move against each other, are sites of intense geologic
activity, such as earthquakes, volcanoes, and mountain building. Plate tectonics is a combination of two
earlier ideas, continental drift and sea-floor spreading. Continental drift is the movement of continents
over the Earth's surface and in their change in position relative to each other. Sea-floor spreading is the
creation of new oceanic crust at mid-ocean ridges and movement of the crust away from the mid-ocean
ridges.
Theory?
v) On the nature of inherited characteristics:
• In the organism there is a pair of factors that controls the appearance of a given characteristic.
• The organism inherits these factors from its parents, one from each.
• Each is transmitted from generation to generation as a discrete, unchanging unit.
• When the gametes are formed, the factors separate and are distributed as units to each gamete.
(This statement is also known as Mendel's rule of segregation.)
• If an organism has two unlike factors for a characteristic, one may be expressed to the total
exclusion of the other.
Law?
vi) When sediments are deposited in water, they will sink through it and deposit as horizontal layers as
the result of gravity (unless acted on by other forces).
Hypothesis?
vii) In a given sequence of sediments, the oldest will be at the bottom and the youngest at the top. It
does not provide ages for those sediments, simply the sequence of their deposition
Theory?
Explanation / Answer
I) Law derived basing on Fermat principle. Light takes the path of least time.
ii) Brewster Law the intensity of polarized light after transmitting through analyser has an intensity of I = I0 Cos2(thita)
iii) No idea
IV)Theory related to evolution of earth.
V) Theory related to Genetic
Vi) Theory related to gravitu
