Open Assignment HESSAGEMYINSTRUCTOR ru LscREEN PRINTER VERSION .BACx NEXT SOURCES Chapter 35, Problem 009 In the figure, assume the two light waves, of wavelength 681 nm in air, are initially out of phase by rad. The indices of refraction of the media are n1 1.32 and n2 1.79. What are the (a) smallest and (b) second smallest value of Lin microns that will put the waves exactly in phase once they pass through the two media? so if they are already out of phase we need to have them shift by a number of half a wavelength to get in phase
a)
wavelengths in 2 - wavelengths in 1 = (2m+1)/2
L/(lambda/n2) - L/(lambda/n1)=1/2
Ln2/lambda - Ln1/lambda =1/2
L = lambda/(2(n2-n1))
L = 681*10^(-9)/(2*(1.79-1.32)) = 7.24*10^(-7) m = 0.724 um
b) same as part a except now =3/2
L = lambda/(2(n2-n1))
L = 2.17 um
