Question

a) Two coils are placed near each other as shown in the figure on the right. The coil on the left is connected to a battery and a switch, and the coil on the right is connected to a resistor. (i) What is the direction of the current in the resistor at an instant immediately after the switch is thrown closed? (ii) What is the direction of the current in the resistor after the switch has been closed for several seconds? (iii) What is the direction of the current in the resistor at an instant after the switch has then been thrown open? Choose each answer from the possibilities (a) left, (b) right, or (c) the current is zero. b) A circular loop of wire lies below a long wire carrying a current that is increasing as in Figure shown on the right. (i) What is the direction of the induced current in the loop, if any? Explain your answer. (ii) Now suppose the loop is next to the same wire as in Figure b shown above. What is the direction of the induced current in the loop, if any? Explain your answer.

Explanation / Answer

The direction of induced current can be identfied by using Lenz's law

(a)

at the instant when the switch is closed , the induced current in the coil opposes the increasing rightward directed field by generating a field toward to the left along the axis . thus from lenz's law the direction of induced current miust be directed from left to right through the resistor

(ii)

when the swithc has been closed for a long time, the flux through the coil is constant. thus, there will be noninduced current that is zero

(iii)

when the switch is opened , the field it produces rapidly decrease in magnitude to oppose this decrease in rightward directed field , the induced curret must produce a filed towards the right along the axis so the induced current is from right to left through the resistor
