Question

Please answer all questions fully and correctly. Please also privde correct final units and any equations if possible. Thanks!!

1a.) A ball of mass 7.7 g with a speed of 27.6 m/s strikes a wall at an angle 30.0o and then rebounds with the same speed and angle. It is in contact with the wall for 42.0 ms. What is the magnitude of the impulse associated with the collision force?

1b.) What is the average force exerted by the ball on the wall?

2.) Suppose m is a certain mass and v is a certain speed v>0. A mass m_1 = 3m moving to the right with a velocity v_1 = +9v collides head-on with a second mass m_2 = 3m moving to the left with a velocity v_2 = -3v. The two masses stick together to form a single mass moving with velocity v_f = n v, where n is a number (no units). What is n?

Explanation / Answer

a) impulse = change in momentum = 7.7 x 10^-3 ( 27.6 x 2 x sin 30) = 0.212 kg m/s

b) force = 0.212 / 42 x 10^-3= 5.06 N

c) conserving momentum,

3m ( 9v) - 2m (3v) = ( 5m ) (vf)

vf = 4.2 v ( n = 4 )
