Question

Light is entering a polarizer or set of polarizers from the left. Determine the relative intensity of the light exiting on the right after passing through all of the polarizers. The dashed vertical lines represent the vertical reference. The solid lines represent either the polarization angle of the light or the transmission angle of the polarizer. CW represents clockwise and CCW represents counterclockwise as viewed from the right looking back to the left along the path of the light.

a.) Unpolarized light enters from the left and passes through one polarizer with the transmission axis oriented 45° CW relative to the vertical and then through a second polarizer with the transmission axis oriented 45° CW relative to the vertical.

b.) Unpolarized light enters from the left and passes through a single polarizer with the transmission axis oriented vertically (0° relative to the vertical).

c.)Linearly polarized light with the plane of polarization horizontal enters from the left and passes through a single polarizer with the transmission axis oriented vertically (0° relative to the vertical).

d.) Linearly polarized light polarized at an angle 45° CW from the vertical enters from the left and passes through a single polarizer with the transmission axis oriented 45° CW relative to the vertical.

e.) Unpolarized light enters from the left and passes through a single polarizer with the transmission axis oriented horizontally (90° relative to the vertical).

f.) Vertically polarized light enters from the left and passes first through a polarizer oriented 45°CW from the vertical and the through a polarizer oriented 45° CW.

g.) Vertically polarized light passes through a polarizer with the transmission axis oriented 90° relative to the vertical and then through a second polarizer oriented vertically.

h.)Linearly polarized light polarized at an angle 45°CW from the vertical passes through one polarizer with the transmission axis oriented 45° CW relative to the vertical and then through a second polarizer with the transmission axis oriented 45° CW relative to the vertical.

i/) Unpolarized light enters from the left and passes first through a polarizer oriented 45°CW from the vertical and the through a polarizer oriented 45° CCW.

Explanation / Answer

a] Intensity is partial.

b] Intensity is partial.

c] Angle is 90 degrees and so the intensity is zero.

d] Intensity will be full.

e] Intensity is partial.

f] The linearly polarized light passes through a polarizer which is at an angle of 45 degrees to vertical and so the intensity is halved and this passes through another polarizer at 45 degrees to vertical. So, the angle between them is 0 and therefore the intensity will be partial.

g] Intensity will be zero.

h] All the polarizers bear an angle of 0 degrees to each other which bears an angle of 0 degrees with incident direction of polarization. Therefore, the intensity will be full.

i] The unpolarized light passing from the polarizer which is at an angle of 45 degrees to vertical gives out partial intensity. This passes through another polarizer at 45 degrees to vertical which is now counter-clockwise. So, the angle between them is 90 and therefore the intensity will be zero.
