Question

A possible means for making an airplane invisible to radar is to coat the plane with an antireflective polymer. If radar waves have a wavelength of 3.45 cm and the index of refraction of the polymer is n = 1.41, how thick would you make the coating? (Assume that there are no addition layers of transparent coating between the polymer and the plane.) _____ cm A beam of monochromatic green light is diffracted by a slit off width 0.450 mm. The diffraction pattern forms on a wall 2.06 m beyond the slit. The distance between the positions of zero intensity on both sides of the central bright fringe is 4.50 mm. Calculate the wavelength of the light. _____nm

Explanation / Answer

1 ans

Given that

wavelength=3.45 cm

refractive index n=1.41

now we find the thickness of plane

the thickness of plate x=3.45*10^-2/1.41-1

=8.4 cm

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(2) ans

Given that

width d=0.45 mm

screen distance D=2.06 m

distance y=4.5 nm

now we find the wavelength

d(y/D)=n(wavelength)

450*10^-6*4.5*10^-3/2.06=wavelength

wavelength=983 nm
