Question

A circuit is constructed with five resistors and a battery as shown. The values for the resistors are: R1 = R5 = 65 , R2 = 108 , R3 = 119 , and R4 = 80 . The battery voltage is V = 12 V.

A) What is Rab, the equivalent resistance between points a and b?

B) What is Rac, the equivalent resistance between points a and c?

C) What is I5, the current that flows through resistor R5?

D) What is I2, the current that flows through resistor R2?

E) What is I1, the current that flows through the resistor R1?

F) What is V4, the voltage across resistor R4?

R, c-MAN R 4 R5 b a RR

Explanation / Answer

r2 and r3 are in series r23 = r2+r3 = 108+119 = 227 ohm

a) rab = r23*r4/423+r4 = 59.15 ohm

b) rab and r1 are in series rac = 65+59.15 = 124.15 ohm

c) rtot = 124.15+65 = 189.15 ohm

itot = v/rtot = 0.063 amp

in series i same

so i5 = 0.063 amp

d) i ab = 0.063 amp

vab = 59.15*0.063 = 3.75 V

in parallel v is same

v23 = v4 = 3.75 V

i23 = 3.75/227 = 0.017 amp

i2 = i3 = 0.017 amp

e) i1 = 0.063 amp

f) v4 = 3.75 V
