Question
Predict the outcome of each sub-experiment in experiment #4, the triple polarizer. Explain your reasoning.
If light of any polarization (including light) passed through a linear polar izard, the emerging light will be linearly polarized, in parallel passed through Now, by the same token. this transmitted light, with intensity is the optical a second polarizer, the emerging light will now be polarized parallel t of the second polarizer, with intensity given by I = Element I_0 cos^2 theta where theta is the relative angle of the optical axes of the two polarizers and e is the efficiency of the polaroid. Experiment: Set up the optical rail so that incandescent light passes through two polarizers, and then to a photodetector. Verify Malus' law by varying the relative angle between the two polarizers. Determine e, the coefficient of efficiency. The following experiment demonstrates one of the most surprising and counter-intuitive aspects of polarization.36 Experiment: Set up two polarizers as in experiment #3 with their optical axes perpendicular, so that no light is transmitted. Introduce a third polarizer after the first two. Is there any change in the transmitted light intensity? If so, make a plot of the final intensity versus the azimuthal angle of the third polarizer. Introduce the third polarizer in front of the first two. Is there any change in the transmitted light intensity as you very the azimuthal angle of the polarizer? If so, make a plot of the final intensity versus the azimuthal angle of the third polarizer.Explanation / Answer
Sub experiment 1:
When third polarizer is introduced after the first two, the intensity of transmitted light is zero for every value of azimuthal angle. This is because no light is transmitted by the second polarizer and hence there is no light entering into the third one.
Sub experiment 2:
When third polarizer is introduced before the first two, the intensity of transmitted light is still zero for every value of azimuthal angle. This is because again no light is transmitted by the second (now third) polarizer of the sequence as it is perpendicular to the first (now second) polarizer.
