Question

Use the worked example above to help you solve this problem. Estimate the fractional change in the volume of Earth's oceans due to an average temperature change of 3 degree C. ___________ Use the fact that the average depth of the ocean is 4.00 times 10^3 m to estimate the change in depth. Note that beta_water = 2.07 times 10^-4(degree C)^-1. ______________ m A 3.00-liter aluminum cylinder at 5.00 degree C is filled to the brim with gasoline at the same temperature. If the aluminum and gasoline are warmed to 52.0 degree C, how much gasoline spills out? _______________ cm^3

Explanation / Answer

initial volume= 3 liter= 3000 cm3.

initial temperature= 5 degrees

final temperrature=52 degrees

coefficient of volume expasion of Aluminum = = 3 = 3*24 x 10^-6 / oC=72x10-6 /o C.

change in volume of gasoline= V (Tf-Ti)= 3000(9.6x10-4)(52-5)= 135.36cm3.

change in volume of Aluminium= V (Tf-Ti)= 3000(72x10-6)(52-5)= 10.152cm3.

so gasoline that spills out= 135.36-10.152

= 125.208 cm3 .
