Question
Explain the global distribution of precipitation. Be sure to include the following: - Identify the factors that influence the global distribution of precipitation. - Describe one region that has high annual precipitation and explain why. - Describe one region that has low annual precipitation and explain why. - Identify one factor that causes precipitation patterns to differ by season. With this information, talk about phoenix, look at its climographs, and explain how it fits into the global distribution of precipitation.
Explanation / Answer
The global distribution of precipitation is influenced by the general circulation of the atmosphere, proximity to large bodies of water, and topography. Precipitation is more where air rises, and less where it sinks. It also is greater near oceans and lakes, and in higher elevations.
The highest rainfall occurs near the equator in the tropics, where the strong heating by the Sun creates significant vertical uplift of air, and the formation of prolonged heavy showers and frequent thunderstorms.
Within the polar regions precipitation is low because air is too cold,so it cannot contain more water vapour. In addition, the cold heavy air descends precluding much cloud formation.
Wind is a factor which influences precipitation patterns to differ by season.
A climograph is a graphical representation of the main climatic parameters, like monthly average temperature and precipitation, at a certain location. It is useful for a fast-view of the climate of a location.
