For the three-way bulb (50 w loo w 150 wo discussed Conceptual Example II. find the resistance of each of tae Glame as Assume that the wattage ratings are not limited by significant figures nore any heating effects on the resistances 52. b The drawing shows three different resistors in tao dinerent its. The battery has a voltage of v 240 v, and the resistors have values of R 50.0 n, R, 25 0 n, and R 100 n (a) For the circuit on the left, determine the current through and the voltage across each resistor. (b) Repeat part (a) for the circuit on the right (a) 53. ssm The drawing shows a circuit that contains a battery, two resistons. and a switch. What is the equivalent resistance of the circuit when the switch is (a) open and (b) closed? What is the total power delivered to the resistors when the switch is (c) open and (d) closed?

Explanation / Answer

Given V =24 V, R1 = 50 ohm, R2 = 25 ohm, R3 = 10 ohm

a) For the left circuit, All resistors are in series so Req =50+25+10=85 ohm

Current through circuit = 24/85 = 0.282 A

As in series current remains same and voltage divides.

So Voltage across R1 = 0.282*50 =14.1 V

Voltage across R2 = 0.282*25 = 7.05 V

  Voltage across R3 = 0.282*10 = 2.82 V

b) For the right circuit, All resistors are in parallel so Req =6.25 ohm

Current through circuit = 24/6.25 = 3.84 A

As in parallel voltage remains same and current divides.

So current across R1 = 24/50 = 0.48 A

current across R2 = 24/25 = 0.96 A

  current across R3 =24/10= 2.4 A
