Question

Self-diffusion is atomic migration in pure metals-i.e., when all atoms exchanging positions are of the same type. Inter diffusion is diffusion of atoms of one metal into another metal. The driving force for steady-state diffusion is the concentration gradient. Interstitial diffusion is normally slower than vacancy diffusion because: (1) interstitial atoms, being smaller, are more mobile; and (2) the probability of an empty adjacent interstitial site is greater than for a vacancy adjacent to a host (or substitutional impurity) atom. Motion of dislocations does not play any role in failure of materials. Yield strength, Toughness and Ductility are sensitive to any prior deformation for example presence of impurities, and or heat treatment to which metal has been subjected. It is ethical for engineers to undertake jobs for which they are not trained. The ionic bond is highly directional and requires charge neutrality. Electrons are transferred between atoms to achieve a stable electron configuration. The factors that cause a metal to experience a ductile to brittle transition are exposure to stresses at relatively low temperatures, high strain rate and the presence of a sharp notch. The atomic packing factor for the HCP crystal structure are the same as for BCC crystal structure. Toughness is the capacity of a material to absorb energy when it is deformed elastically and then, upon unloading to have this energy recovered.
