Question

1. Consider the x-axis with 4.0 C at x = 1.0 meter and -2.0 C at the origin. Where should 6.0 C be placed so that the net force on it is zero?

2.There is a 5.0 C charge at each of 3 corners of a square (each side 70. mm long). What is the force on +6.0 C placed at the center of the square?

3.Three point charges are placed on the x-axis. A charge of +2.0 C is placed at the origin, -2.0 C to the right at x = 50 cm, and +4.0 C at the 100 cm mark. What are the magnitude and direction of the electrostatic force which acts on the charge at the origin?

Explanation / Answer

q1 = 4.0 C @ x = 1.0 m
q2 = -2.0 C @ x = 0 m

A charge will experience zero force at a point , where Electric field = 0

E = k Q/r^2
Let charge be placed x m from q2 towards negative x axis.
Distance of charge from q1 = 1.0 m + x

E = k ( 4.0C / (1+x)^2 - 2.0uC / (x)^2)
4.0 C / (1+x)^2 = 2.0uC/(x)^2)
4.0 * x^2 = 2.0 (1+x)^2
Solving for x
x = 2.41 m

Charge 6.0
C should be placed @ x = - 2.41 m on the x axis.
