Question
?The Figure shows a series of equipotentials in a particular region of space, and five different paths along which an electron is moved. (a) Does the electric field in this region point to the right, to the left, up, or down? (b) For each path, indicate whether the work done on the electron by the electric field is positive, negative, or zero. (c) Rank the paths in order of increasing amount of work done on the electron by the electric field. (d) Is the electrick field near path A greater than, less than, or equal to the electric field near path E? Explain.
-5 V 0 V 15 V 35 V 60 VExplanation / Answer
a)
As the electric potential decreases from right to left , so Electric field will be towards left
b)
For A :
the particle goes from lower potential to higher potential. So, potential difference is +ve . So, work done is +ve <----as Work done = -charge*potential difference (as charge of electron is -ve, so work done is +ve)
For B:
potential difference = +ve, So, work done is +ve
For C:
potential difference = +ve. So, work done is +ve
For D:
potential difference = -ve. So, work done is -ve
Similarly For E:
Work done = -ve
c)
E < D < A < C < B
d)
Electric field at E is greater than at A.
It is due to the fact that at E , the change in potential is (60-35 = 25 V) and at A it (0--5 = 5 V)
