Question

Three identical point charges (+2.0 nC) are placed at the corners of an equilateral triangle with sides of 2.0-m length. If the electric potential is taken to be zero at infinity, what is the potential at the midpoint of any one of the sides of the triangle? A particle (charge 7.5 mueC) is released from rest at a point on the x axis, x - 10cm. It begins to move due to the presence of a 2.0muC charge which remains fixed at the origin. What is the kinetic energy of the particle at the instant it passes the point x = 1.0 m?

Explanation / Answer

1)   Potential = 8.98*109*2*10-9/1 + 8.98*109*2*10-9/1 + 8.98*109*2*10-9/(2*sin60)

                        = 17.96 + 17.96 + 10.369

                          = 46.289 V

2) work done = (8.98*109*2*10-6/0.1 - 8.98*109*2*10-6/1) * 7.5*10-6

                                    = 1.2123 J

    => 1/2 *m*v2 = 1.2123

     =>    Kinetic energy of particle = 1.2123 J
