Question

The current in the figure below is 0.72 A. (Let the internal resistance of battery 1 be

r1 = 1.2

and the internal resistance of battery 2 be

r2 = 1.5 .)

(a) Find the voltage drop Vab.

(b) Find the power dissipated in R.

(c) Find the useful electric power supplied by battery 2. (Note: Do not forget the internal resistance of battery 2.)

(d) Find the rate at which chemical energy is stored in battery 1. (Note: Do not include power dissipated in the internal resistor of battery 1 in your answer.)

r 6.0 V Battery 1 r, 9.0 V Battery 2

Explanation / Answer

a) Vab = V2 + V1 - I (r1 + r2)
= 9 - 6 - .72 (1.2 + 1.5)
= 1.0156 V

b) Pab = Vab I
= 1.01566 (.72)
= 0.76032W

c) 9 - (.72* 1.5) = 8.892

8.20 * .72 =6.402 W

d) P = V I
= 6 * .72
= 4.32 W
