Question

This questions is real world related and I'm not sure what I'm not undertstanding. Thanks for your help in advance!

A TESLA model S 85kWh battery averages 340 Wh/ mile. It could be a little more or a litle less depending on weather conditions and use of internal systems. Is this value saying the car uses 340 watts per mile. I know a watt is a Joule per second but I dont understand how Wh and W correlate and relate to each other?

From my understanding, if your going 60 miles per hour in this car that has a 340 Wh/mile rating, 1 min equals = 0.01666 hr, so roughly 20,400 Watts per mile? Would that be correct? How would I go about doing this with other speeds?

Thanks in advance!

Explanation / Answer

We know,

1 W = 1 J/s

1 Wh = 1(J/s)(60*60*s) (since 1 hour = 60 min = 60*60 s)

= 3600 J

and
1 Wh/mile = 3600 J/mile

here it was given, 340 Wh/mile = 340*3600 J/mile

= 1224000 J/mile

so, the engine consumes 1224000 J of energy per every 1 mile distance.

Hope you understand it now.
