Question

A circuit is constructed with five resistors and a battery as shown. The values for the resistors are: R1 = R5 = 63 , R2 = 134 , R3 = 90 , and R4 = 102 . Explanation / Answer

resistence between point a and b are R2, R3 and R4, R2 and R3 are in series and R4 in parallel so,

Ri = R2 + R3

Ri = 134 + 90

Ri = 224 ohm

1 / Rab = 1 / Ri + 1 / R4

1 / Rab = 1 / 224 + 1 / 102

Rab = 70.085 ohm

resistance between a and c are Rab and R1 and they are in series so,

Rac = Rab + R1

Rac = 70.085 + 63

Rac = 133.085 ohm

equivalent resistance = Rac + R5

equivalent resistance = 133.085 + 63

equivalent resistance = 196.085 ohm

by ohm's law

V = IR

12 = I * 196.085 ohm

I = 0.0612 A

current I5 through R5 = 0.0612 A

current I2 through R2 = 224 * 0.0612 / (224 + 102)

current I2 through R2 = 0.042 A
