Question

A circuit is constructed with five resistors and a battery as shown. The values for the resistors are: R1 = R5 = 50 , R2 = 125 , R3 = 73 , and R4 = 68 . The battery voltage is V = 12 V.

a) What is Rab, the equivalent resistance between points a and b?_____

b) What is Rac, the equivalent resistance between points a and c?______

c) What is I5, the current that flows through resistor R5?________A

d) What is I2, the current that flows through resistor R2?________A

e) What is I1, the current that flows through the resistor R1?______A .

f) What is V4, the voltage across resistor R4?_____V

Ri b 4

Explanation / Answer

According to the concept of the current electricity

Here we observed the resistance R2and R3 are series connection

Resistance A=125+73=198 ohm

The resistance A and R4 are parallel connection

The equivalent resistance b/w points a and b

Rab=198*68/198+68=50.62 ohm

The resistance Rab and R1 are series connection

The equivalent resistance between points a and c

Rac =50.62+50=100.62 ohm

The resistance Rac and R5 are series connection

The total equivalent resistance Req=100.62+50=150.62 ohm

Now we find the current

Current i=12/150.62=0.0797 A

The current in resistance R1 and R5 =>I1=I5=0.0797 A

Now we find the current in the resistance R4

Current I4=68*0.0797/(198+68)=0.0204 A

Current in resistance R2=>I4=198*0.0797/198+68=0.0593 A

Now we find the voltage across the resistance R4

V4=68*0.0204=1.4 v
