My Notes 5.00 Figure P19.40 (a) Find the direction and magnitude of the magnetic field at a point midway between the wires. (b) Find the magnitude and direction of the magnetic field at point P, located 20.0 cm above the wire carrying the 5.00 A current. Your response differs significantly from the correct answer. Explanation / Answer

Given

b)

currents in the wires are say i1 = 3 A, i2 = 5 A out of the page

the point P is at a distnce of 20 cm above wire i2 , the wires are separated by a distance of 20 cm

the magnetic field at p due to i1 is

from Ampere's law b = mue0*i1/2p*r1

r1 is = sqrt(0.2^2+0.2^2) = 0.2828 m

B1 = 4pi*10^-7*3 /(2pi*0.2828) T

B1 = 2.121641*10^-6 T

and due to wire i2 = 5 A is

B2 = 4pi*10^-7*5 /(2pi*0.20) T

B2 = 5*10^-6 T

the sum of the magnetic field is B = B1+B2

B = 2.121641*10^-6 + 5*10^-6 T

B = 7.121641*10^-6 T

the direction is in to the page
