Question
Next the student is given a rubber band and asked to determine whether the relationship between the restoring force exerted by the rubber band and the amount it is stretched is the same as that of an ideal spring c) Describe an experimental procedure that the student could use to collect the necessary data, including all the equipment the student would need. d) How should the student analyze the data to determine whether the relationship between the restoring force exerted by the rubber band and the amount it is stretched is the same as that of an ideal spring? What evidence from the analysis would be used to make the determination?Explanation / Answer
c) The relationship between the restoring force and displacement for an ideal spring is given by
F=-kx
k - spring constant
x - displacement
Equipment - hanger with 2 hooks, set of weights(mass = 100g, 200g, 300g ..500g), rubberband, spring
Procedure - hang each of the weight to the ideal spring suspended from the hanger and measure the displacement in each case.
Repeat the procedure with rubber band instead of the spring.
d)
In case of the spring, equate the restoring force to the weight hung (mg), the spring constant can be found in each case.
spring constant k = mg/x
M - mass of the weight used, x - corresponding displacement, g = 9.8m/s2
The average of the spring constant in each of the above 5 steps can be used as the final value of the spring constant to account for measurment errors. The 5 spring constants in each of the 5 steps must be having similar values. This can be used as a check to verfiy the correctness of the experiment.
Repeat the above calculations for the measurements taken with the rubberband. The 5 spring constants in each of the 5 steps done with the rubberband must be having similar values. If so, it is the evidence that the ruber band behaves as an ideal spring. If not, it is an evidence that the rubberband doesn't behave as an ideal spring.
