Your hopping Cort-The .. Cutnell, Physics, 10e Hele l PRINTER V Chapter 23, Problem 15 A 39.0-mH inductor has a reactance of 2.80 ko. (a) What is the frequency of the ac current that passes through the inductor? (b) What is the capacitance of a capacitor that has the same reactance at this frequency? The frequency is tripled, so that the reactances of the inductor and capacitor are no longer equal, What are the new reactances of (c) the inductor and (d) the capacitor? (a) Number (b) Number (c) Number (d) Number Click if you would like to Show Work for this question Open Show Work Units Units Question Attempts: O of 5 used SAVE FOR L

Explanation / Answer

a) XL = 2 pi f L

f = XL / 2 pi L = (2800) / (2 pi * 39 * 10-3)

frequency = 11426 Hz

b) C = 1 / 2 pi f XC = 1 / (2 pi * 11426 * 2800)

capacitance = 4.97 nF

c) New inductive reactance = 2800 * [(2 pi * 3 f L) / (2 pi f L)]

= 2800 * 3

= 8400 ohm = 8.4 k.ohm

d) New inductive reactance = 2800 * (1 / 2 pi f C) / (1 / 2 pi (3 f C) )

= 2800 / 3

= 933 ohm = 0.933 k.ohm
