Question

Your group has 8 glucose molecules and 7 triglyceride molecules. There is plenty of oxygen so all of your substrate will undergo oxidative phosphorylation. Start with your glucose molecules and trace them through glycolysis, the Krebs cycle, and the electron transport chain. Remember that 2 pyruvate are produced from each glucose molecule. The triglyceride is composed of a glycerol and 3 fatty acid chains of palmitic acid (a 16 carbon saturate fatty acid). Your triglyceride molecules will go through beta-oxidation. The end product of beta-oxidation is acety CoA. For each fatty acid chain that goes through beta-oxidation, 8 acetyl-CoA, 7 NADH, and 7 FADH are produced The acetyl-CoA that is produced from beta-oxidation will then enter the Krebs cycle, while the NADH and FADH produced during beta-oxidation will go directly to the electron transport chain. Remember, there are 3 fatty acio chains on each triglyceride molecule.

Explanation / Answer

13. There are 7 triglycerides each having three fatty acid chain. Each fatty acid chain produces 8 Acetyl-CoA thus total Acetyl-CoA produced is 7*3*8=168

14. For each fatty acid chain 7 NADH are produced. So if total is seen then from the 7 triglycerides each with three fatty acid chain NADH produced is 7*3*7=147

15. For each fatty acid chain 7 FADH are produced. So if total is seen then from the 7 triglycerides each with three fatty acid chain FADH produced is 7*3*7=147

16. Each molecule of Acetyl-CoA produces 12 ATP, 8 molecules of Acetyl-CoA are produced so total ATP produced is 12*8=96 ATP.

17.Each molecule of Acetyl-CoA produces 3 NADH, 8 molecules of Acetyl-CoA are produced so total NADH produced is 3*8=24 NADH.There are 3 fatty acid chains so total NADH is 24*3=72 NADH.

18. Each molecule of Acetyl-CoA produces 1 FADH, 8 molecules of Acetyl-CoA are produced so total FADH produced is 1*8=8 FADH. There are 3 fatty acid chains so total FADH is 8*3=24 FADH.

19. 3 NADH molecules are formed each further producing 3 molecules of ATP thus total ATP is 3*3=9 ATP.The total 8 Acetyl-CoA are there each giving 3 NADH thus total NADH is 3*8=24. Total atp thus produced is 24*9=216 ATP.There are 3 fatty acid chains so total ATP is 216*3=648 ATP.

20. 1 FADH molecules are formed each further producing 1 molecules of ATP thus total ATP is 1*1=1 ATP.The total 8 Acetyl-CoA are there each giving 1 FADH thus total FADH is 1*8=8. Total atp thus produced is 8*1=8 ATP.There are 3 fatty acid chains so total ATP is 8*3=24 ATP.

21. Total number of ATP produced is ATP from ACETYL CoA + ATP from NADH +ATP from FADH=8*12*3+648+24=344 ATP.
