Question
2 For this problem, look up any necessary astronomical values to at least 3 significant figures a. (4 pts.) What would be your linear (tangential) speed, due to the Earth's rotation, if you were located on the Earth's equator? Show your work Thought question (not for credit): How would you find the linear speed of someone located in Honolulu, or Seattle WA, or Anchorage AK? What is the linear speed of someone standing at the North Pole?] b. (4 pts.) While located on the equator, what is the magnitude and direction of your centripetal acceleration (the acceleration needed to keep you moving in a circle on the Earth as it rotates)? Convert your final answer to gees. ( gee 9.80 m/s) Show your work. c.(2 pts.) Suppose that you have a mass of 75.00 kg. While located on the equator, what must be the magnitude and direction of the net force acting on you, in order to create your centripetal acceleration? d. (4 pts.) Name the two physical forces whose vector addition creates this net force, and find the magnitude and direction of each. You do NOT need to show your work for this problem, but your answers must have correct units and 4 significant figures Name of force: Magnitude &Directio; Name Magnitude& Direction: Thought question (not for credit): Suppose you were to stand on a bathroom scale on the equator, rotation of the Earth, how much less than your true weight would the scale read?1 be to theExplanation / Answer
1)The earth complete 1 rotation in 24 hours
so, w = 2pi/T
=2pi/(24*60*60)
=7.27*10^-5 rad/s
radius of the earth = 6371 km
so speed = wr (where r is the radius of the earth)
=7.27*10^-5 * 6371*10^3
=463.172 m/s
b)centripetal acceleration = w^2*r
=(7.27*10^-5)^2*6371*10^3
=0.033 m/s^2 (towards the center of the earth)
c)Force = mw^2*r
=75*0.033
=2.475 N (away from the center of the earth)
