COPD:
Definition: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is a chronic inflammatory disease which causes airway obstruction.
Signs and symptoms:
• Breathing difficulties like shortness of breath
• Chest tightness
• Cough
• Sputum production that is clear, white, yellow or greenish
• Wheezing
• Cyanosis of lips or fingernail beds
• Lethargy
• Weight loss
• Edema of legs
• Respiratory infections
Treatment:
• Smoking cessation
• Medications like bronchodilators, steroids, antibiotics , oxygen therapy, in severe cases- lung volume reduction surgery, lung transplant, bullectomy.
Nursing diagnosis:
• Impaired gas exchange
• Ineffective airway clearance
• Ineffective breathing pattern
• Self care deficit
• Activity intolerance
Nursing intervention:
• Teaching controlled coughing
• Teach inspiratory muscle training
• Teach diaphragmatic breathing
• Teach pursed lip breathing
• Manage daily activities to reduce energy expenditure
• Improve exercise tolerance
• Administer medication
• Monitor oxygen saturation levels
• Prevent infection
• Provide oxygen if needed
