Question
The data in the graph to the right were collected in a seasonally dry, tropical forest that receives an average of 1500 mm of precipitation y?1, mostly in the wet season. The dotted curve represents the general trend reflected by the open circles (wet season data). Below this, the solid curve represents the general trend reflected by the closed circles (dry season data). Use this information and class information to respond to the following questions.
d.) Why does the difference between transpiration in the wet season and transpiration in the dry season appear to increase as VPD increases?
2.5 2.0 1.5 1.0 o Wet seaso . Dry season 2 0.5 0.00 0.25 0.50 0.75 100 VPD (kPa)Explanation / Answer
Transpiration rates increase as the temperature increases, especially during the growing season, when the air is warmer due to stronger sunlight and warmer air masses. Higher temperatures cause(more VPD) the plant cells which control the openings (stoma) where water is released to the atmosphere to open, whereas colder temperatures(less VPD) cause the openings to close.
