Question

PRACTICE IT Use the worked example above to help you solve this problem. A block of mass m -1.41 kg, initially moving to the right with a velocity of +4.14 m/s on a frictionless horizontal track, collides with a massless spring attached to a second block of mass m2 2.07 kg moving to the left with a velocity of -2.06 m/s, as shown in Figure a. The spring has a spring constant of 5.58 x 102 N/m. (a) Determine the velocity of block 2 at the instant when block 1 is moving to the right with a velocity of +3.00 m/s, as n in Figure b. (Indicate the direction with the sign of your answer.) (b) Find the compression of the spring Use the values from PRACTICE IT to help you work this exercise. Consider the instant that block 2 is at (b) Find the compression of the spring.

Explanation / Answer

Practice it ;

(A) Applying momentum conservation,

pi = pf

(1.41 x 4.14) + (2.07 x -2.06) = (1.41 x 3) + (2.07 v2)

v2 = - 1.28 m/s ....Ans

(B) Applying energy conservation,

(1.41 x 4.14^2 / 2) + (2.07 x 2.06^2 / 2) = (1.41 x 3^2 / 2) + (2.07 x 1.28^2 / 2) + (558x^2 / 2)

x = 0.174 m

EXERCISE:

(A) momentum conservation,

(1.41 x 4.14) + (2.07 x -2.06) = (1.41 x v1f) + (2.07 x 0)

v1f = 1.12 m/s

(b) (1.41 x 4.14^2 / 2) + (2.07 x 2.06^2 / 2) = (1.41 x 1.12^2 / 2) + (2.07 x 0) + (558x^2 / 2)

x = 0.236 m
