Select one or more:

a. ground shaking

b. landslides and other slope failures caused by shaking

c. liquefaction of soils and other weak materials because of shaking

d. destruction by a tsunami

2. Is each town very risky or less risky, compared to most other towns?

3. From the general location of the earthquake, which geologic feature is likely to have caused the earthquake? There is a map view (looking straight down) of this figure in the worksheet, which should be used if you plot circles to locate the earthquake.

b. faulting along the subduction zone near the oceanic trench

c. faulting along the Gray Cliffs near the center of the image

d. the movement of magma beneath Lava Mountain

e. a deep fault directly beneath the city of White Sands

Explanation / Answer

1.Since the town of Sand point is reclaimed land out of sea. So the town is situated very nearby to the shoreline. Several earthquakes have been recorded in the Sand Point. The shaking due to earthquakes causes submarine and subaerial landslides, rock falls, avalanches which in turn generates Tsunami. So the town of Sand point is prone to landslides and other slope failures and destruction due to Tsunami and liquefaction of soils due to shaking. In the Town of Hills side the problem of landslides and other slope failures are a matter of concern. In the mesaview the threat of liquefaction of soil due to shaking of earthquake is the major environmental threat. In Cliffside the threating hazards are slope failures and destruction, Tsunami and liquefaction of soil. In Riverton the liquefaction of soil and Tsunami are the environmental threats faced by town. In white sand, liquefaction and destruction by Tsunami is a threat.

2. The Sand point is more prone to earthquakes and Tsunamis than other towns. Numerous earthquakes have hit the town since 1800s because it is located along the Alaska- Aleutian subduction zone.
