Question

An open sided pipe can't play low frequencies below 50hz but plays loudly at frequencies of 54, 72, 90, and 108hz. It won't play in between those frequencies.
Determine:
1- The fundamental freuency mode of the pipe. 2-What are the harmonics are those frequencies. 3-The length of the pipe. 4- If the pipe is close ended at one side now, find the 4 lowest frequencies that the pipe will have and what are their harmonics.
Thank you. An open sided pipe can't play low frequencies below 50hz but plays loudly at frequencies of 54, 72, 90, and 108hz. It won't play in between those frequencies.

Explanation / Answer

1) in a open pipe frequencies are f1,2f1,3f1 ..... are possiblegiven fequencies are multiples of 18 Hz

so fundamental frequency is 18 Hz

2) harmonics are 18,36,54,72,90 and so on

3) f1 = v/2l

f2 = 2f2 = 2v/2l = v/l

speed of sound is 343 m/s

so l = v/2f1 = 343/2*18 = 9.53 m

4) if the pipe is close at one end

f1 = v/4l = 18/2 = 9 Hz

possible prequencies are 9,27,45,63 Hz
