Question
Two point charges, Q1 and Q2, are placed at (0,0) and (3,0) as shown. The grid spacing is in meters.
Assume the charges are glued into place.
1) There is a point on the x-axis where a small positive test charge would feel no net force from Q1 and Q2. In which region is this point located?

1)
let the test charge "q" be distance "r" to the right of charge Q2
d = distance between charge Q1 and Q2
F1 = force by charge Q1 on q towards left = k Q1 q/(d + r)
F2 = force by charge Q2 on q towards left = k Q2 q/(r)
using equilibrium of force
F1 = F2
k Q1 q/(d + r) = k Q2 q/(r)
(5 x 10-6)/(3 + r) = (4 x 10-6)/r
r = 12 m
hence r > 3
