Question

We're covering the different types of tissue (epithelial, connective, muscle, nerve) and their structures, but I'm having trouble identifying the structures in this image. I'm thinking a few of them are plasma cells or mast cells, but I've never done something like this before, so it's proving difficult. A1 and A2 are parts of whatever structure A is (blood vessel?) and B1-3 of structure B (no idea).

I will give a 'helpful' rating for naming all of the structures and 'lifesaver' if each entry includes a brief description of how you identified it.

Explanation / Answer

how? look at it and ask "what does it appear to be useful for?" many things, but not particularly useful for just one thing. transport seems like a key function. the little black squiggles hint at adipose. putting it all together will give you a few guesses. the first few very well may be wrong. that's okay...keep asking yourself if it makes sense. this cross section seems to be part of something peripheral because there are many different things going on here--some of them in pairs. it's hard to say without any clues to species what the section is from. i have a few guesses but they are of little value without a clue about the species. it could be a tail. now for the letters: "a unit": this is an artery. big clue--the muscular looking a1 and the neighboring B--side by side tunnels but only the one has a muscular layer. that says blood vessels of periphery. a: artery lumen a1: middle coat. or tunic media. whichever nomenclature you use is fine i am sure. this is the muscular layer. a2: tunica externa. this is the outermost covering of your artery. f: artery c: nerve--clues: what looks like maybe a myelin sheath small part in the middle of the large blob, possibly an axon. smaller blob looks branch-like. also, it is not between the blood vessels. b: this is a vein. b--the vein lumen b3--tunic intima b1--tunic media. connective tissue with elastic fibers, appears to be some transverse muscular tissue b2: tunic extrema e -vein
