Question
Iwo astronauts on opposite ends of a spaceship are comparing lunches. One has an ip apple, the other has an orange. They decide to trade. Astronaut l tosses the 0.I 15 l (Irm kg)) apple toward astronaut 2 with a speed of (texttip{v Mrm i IYHv il) l.05 (Mrm m/s The 0.170 (tlrm kg) orange is tossed from astronaut 2 to astronaut l with a speed of 1.25 (HIrm m/s). Unfortunately, the fruits collide, sending the orange off with a speed of 0.870 (tlrm m/sh) in the negative y direction. Q Tap image to zoom Part A What are the final speed and direction of the apple in this case? 1.26 rm m/s Submit Give UpExplanation / Answer
From conservation of momentum (p)we have
y -dir pi = 0 = pf So the momenta of the fruit in the y direction must be equal and opposite
So ma*vay = mo*voy (a - apple o orange)
vay = mo*moy/ma = 0.170*0.870/.115 = 1.286 m/s ( + y)
x - dir 0.115*1.05 - 0.170*1.25 = mo*0 + ma*vax
So vax = (0.115*1.05 - 0.170*1.25)/.115 = 0.7978 m/s
So va = sqrt(1.286^2 + 0.7978^2) = 1.51 m/s
theta = arctan(1.286/0.7978) = 58.2 degrees
