Question
1. List a few of the substances that fall under the category of particulate matter.
2.How does PM-10 particulate matter differ from that called PM-2.5? Which poses the greatest risk to human health?
3. How is particulate matter removed from the atmosphere?
4. Why is light wind, rather than a strong wind, more conductiveto high concentrations of air pollution?
5.How does atmospheric stability influence the accumallation of air pollutants naer the surface?
6.Why is it that polluted air and inversions seem to go hand in hand?
7.What type of weather pattern is best for dispersion of pollutants?
Explanation / Answer
1.dust , dirt, smoke , soil , soot etc.
2.PM-10 is much bigger than PM-2.5. PM-10 is present in dust from crushing unit etc where as PM-2.5 is present in smoke emitted from forest fires, vehicles etc. PM-2.5 CREATE GREATER RISK TO HUMAN LIFE.
3.THEY ARE REMOVED BY USING INERTIAL COLLECTORS LIKE CYCLONIC SEPARATORS , FABRIC FILTER COLLECTORS LIKE WET SCRUBBERS ETC.
4.light wind is responsible for the temperature inversion but strong wind doesent. a strong wind carries the particulates from one region to another ahereas the light wind allow the particulates doesent carry the particulates thereby stagnating the pollutants.
5. air flows from high to low pressure. but in stable atmospheric condition the air from high altitude are not able to mix with the air at lower altitude , so the pollutants are not carried but stagnated leading to accumulation.
6.polluted air leads to the temperature inversion, in fact it is the main reason for the temperature inversion.
7. strong instability and deep mixing of the air current is best for dispersion of pollutants.
