Question

Scooter is solving the following problem: "A cannon fires a 50 kg cannonball horizontally at 150 m/s. If the mass of the cannon is 300kg, calculate the recoil speed on the cannon just after it has fired." Scooter proposes the following as a general solution to the problem: nu_c, f = -m_b/m_c nu_b, f a) Evaluate Scooter's solution with a unit analysis. b) Come up with two (2) special or limiting cases and evaluate Scooter's solution for each special/limiting case. c) Can you conclude Scooter is correct?

Explanation / Answer

Answer

By using Conservation of Momentum.

Mass Cannon Ball * Velocity Cannon Ball = Mass cannon * recoil Velocity after ball has been fired

50 * 150 = 300 * recoil velocity
7500 = 300 * recoil velocity

7500 / 300 = recoil velocity = 25 ms^-1
