Question

A train car mounted cannon is able to shoot a projectile at a 45-degree angle as depicted in the figure below. Which of the following statements is true immediately after a projectile is fired? (a) The cannon moves to the left and there is an upward vertical force on the cannon. (b) The cannon moves to the right and there is an upward vertical force on the cannon. (c) The cannon moves to the right and there is a downward vertical force on the cannon. (d) The cannon moves to the left and there is a downward vertical force on the cannon. (e) The cannon moves to the left and there is no vertical force on the cannon. (f) The cannon moves to the right and there is no vertical force on the cannon.

Explanation / Answer

As the momentum of the projectile changes in the direction = +45 deg (1st quadrant)

So, by momentum conservation, momentum must change of the cannon in the direction opposite to that of the projectile. so, the momentum must change in 180 + 45 = 225 deg (3rd quadrant)

So, the cannon moves towards left and there is a downward vertical force on the cannon <---- option d
