Question
The conducting rod ab shown in figure makes frictionless contact with metal rails ca and db. The apparatus is in a uniform magnetic field of 1.0 T, perpendicular to the plane of the figure. (a) Find the magnitude of the induced emf in the rod when it is moving toward the right with a speed of 7.5 m/s. (b) In what direction does the current flow in the rod? (c) If the resistance of the circuit abdc is a constant 1.5 2 ohm, find the induced current. (d) Find the magnitude and direction of the force required to keep the rod moving to the right with a constant of 7.5 m/s.Explanation / Answer
(a) e = B L v
e = 1 x 0.50 x 7.5 = 3.75 Volt
(B) clockwise
(C) I = e / R = 3.75 / 1.5
I = 2.5 A
(D) P = F v = V I
F = (3.75 x 2.5) / 7.5
F = 1.25 N
