Question

Four views of a horseshoe magnet and a current-carrying wire are shown in the drawing below. The wire is perpendicular to the page, and the current is directed out of the page toward you. In which one or more of these situations does the magnetic force on the current point due east? A) 1 B) 2 C) 3 D) 4 A square, current-carrying loop is placed in a uniform magnetic field B with the plane of the loop parallel to the magnetic field (see the drawing to the right). The dashed line is the axis of rotation. If the current flows around the loop as shown, which way would the loop initially rotate? A) Clockwise B) Counter-Clockwise C) Neither, it would not rotate The drawing shows an end-on view of three parallel wires that are perpendicular to the plane of the paper. In two of the wires the current is directed into the paper, while in the remaining wire the current is directed out of the paper. If the two outer wires are held rigidly in place, which way will the middle wire move? A) To the left B) To the right C) It will not move at all Each of the three drawings shows the same three concentric loops of wire. The currents in the loops have the same magnitude, I, and have the directions shown. Rank the magnitude of the net magnetic field produced at the center of each of the four drawings, largest to smallest. A) A, B, C B) A, C, B C) B, A, C D) B, C, A E) C, A, B F) C, B, A

Explanation / Answer

(1) The answer is C. It is evident from the right hand thumb rule. Thumb points in the east and curling of the fingers gives the magnetic field direction. Only configuration gives the direction satisfying the condition. Magnetic field direction is from north pole to south pole.

(2) The plane is parallel to the magnetic field. Hence the horizontal sides of the loop doesnt exert any force on the loop. The vertical sides of the loop will exert a force on the loop. The right side of the loop, the force is directed towards the plane of the paper and the left side is directed outward of the plane of the paper. Hence the loop will rotate counter-clockwise

(3) Not sure as the direction of magnetic field is doubtful

(4) Its A,B,C. A has the 3 loops of currents carrying in the same direction. Hence magnetic fields will get added up.

In B, the magnitude of the magnetic field due to the outermost and the innermost loop will get added up and the middle loop is subtracted.

In C, the middle loop and the inner loop will get added up and the outer loop has magnitude of opposite sign of the two. Hence this configuration has the least magnitude
