Question

Unpolarized light is incident on three polarizing filters in a row. The initial intensity of the light is 10 W/m^2. The first filter is aligned vertically, the second at an angle of 45 degrees from vertical, and the third at an angle of 90 degrees from vertical. What is the intensity of the light after passing through all three filters? Write your answer in W/m^2. Keep 2 digits after decimal point. Your answer should be formatted like: 0.00 A sheet of glass has n_red = 1.66 and n_violet = 1.71. A beam of white light is incident on the sheet at 40 degrees. What is the angular spread of light inside the glass? Keep 3 digits after decimal point. Your answer should be formatted like: 0.000

Explanation / Answer

Given

initial intensity of the light 10 W/m2

the first filter aligned vertically so the angle theta is zero so the intensity after coming from first filter is 10 W/m2

and the second filter is at an angle 45 degrees wrt verticle

from malus law i2 = I1 cos^2 theta

       = I1 cos ^2 45

       = 10 (1/2) = 5 W/m2

as the third filter is aligned at 90 degrees wrt vertical so no polarized light comes from the third filter so I3 = 0.00 W/m2

Q 28

from snell's law na sin theta a = nb sin theta b

for red

   n_r sin theta a = n_a sin theta b

   1.66 sin theta a = 1* sin 40

       theta a = 22.78172 degrees

for violet

   n_v sin theta a = n_a sin theta b

   1.71 sin theta a = 1* sin 40

       theta a = 22.07989 degrees

so the angular spread is 22.78172 - 22.07989 = 0.70183 degrees
