Question

A rectangular loop of wire with sides H = 28 cm and W = 52 cm is located in a region containing a constant magnetic field B = 0.89 T that is aligned with the positive y-axis as shown. The loop carries current I = 170 mA. The plane of the loop is inclined at an angle theta = 34 degree with respect to the x-axis. 1. What is mu_x, the x-component of the magnetic moment vector of the loop? 2) What is mu_y, the y-component of the magnetic moment vector of the loop? 3) What is tau_z, the z-component of the torque exerted on the loop? 4) What is F_bC, the magnitude of the force exerted on segment bc of the loop?

Explanation / Answer

Magmetic Moment = IXA = 170X10^-3X28X52X10^-4 = 0.0247

it will be directed upward the plane and making angle 34 deg with Z axis.

So, component in x direction = 0.0247Xsin34 = -0.0138

COmponent in the Y direction will be zero.

Torque = -0.0138X0.89 k - 0.0247Xcos34X0.89 i= -0.0138 k - 0.0195 i Ans

Force on segment BC = ILXB, but current direction and magnetic field direction will be same, so force will be zero.
