Question

A 31.2 uF capacitor is connected to a 55.7 ohm resistor and a generator whose rms output is 23.6 V at 50.0 Hz. Calculate the rms current in the circuit. 2.03x10^-1 A You are correct. Computer's answer now shown above. Your receipt no. is 163-6890 Calculate the voltage drop across the resistor 1.13x10^1 v You are correct. Computer's answer now shown above. Your receipt no. is 163-1790 Calculate the voltage drop across the capacitor. 2.07x10^1 v You are correct. Computers answer now shown above. Your receipt no. is 163-2143 Calculate the phase angle for the circuit.

Explanation / Answer

You have already solved the first three problems. So I am solving only the last part of the problem.

Here -

XC = 1 /( 2 * 50 * 31.2 * 10^-6 ) = 102.07

R = 55.7

So, Z = sqrt [R^2 + X^2] = sqrt[55.7^2 + 102.07^2] = 116.28

Now, recall that the phase angle, , is given by

cos = R / Z

= arc cos (R/Z) = arc cos (55.7 / 116.28) = 61.38 degrees
